Richard Benjafield
Richard Benjafield has led a distinguished career performing in contemporary music, both as soloist and ensemble musician. He studied at the RNCM (with Ian Wright), University of Ghana and Tanglewood Music Centre (with John Wyre). For ten years Richard led Ensemble Bash, the first percussion quartet to establish a career in this country. As well as commissioning and continually performing a new repertoire of over forty pieces, many now established as standard repertoire, the group performed twice at the BBC Proms, and toured worldwide.
Richard's projects have included solo improvisations to live graphic projections, Morton Feldman's four-hour trio For Philip Guston at the Royal Academy of Art, Xenakis's Psappha and Okho with the Richard Alston Dance Company, and a UK tour of Steve Reich's Sextet. Richard has conducted Cage at Barbican Hall, Milhaud and Martinu at Spitalfields Festival, and also collaborated with Joanna MacGregor, Harrison Birtwistle, Marque Gilmore and Graham Fellows (aka John Shuttleworth).
Richard has been Professor of Percussion at the Guildhall School since 1995, and is currently Acting Head of Wind, Brass & Percussion.
