Mental Health Awareness Week: Finding Community Through sound

As we mark Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re reminded of the importance of community, how vital it is to feel seen, heard and supported, especially for those of us working in creative fields where isolation can be a common experience.

At sound, we believe that fostering a strong, connected community of composers and creatives is essential for both professional growth and personal wellbeing. That’s why we’ve developed a range of supportive spaces where you can connect with others, share ideas, ask for help, or simply have a chat with someone who understands.

Call Our Composers' Helpline – Every Wednesday

If you're a composer looking for guidance, feedback or just someone to talk to, our Composers’ Helpline is here for you. Every Wednesday from 1–2pm, one of our expert team, Pete Stollery, Fiona Robertson, Lisa Robertson or Emily Doolittle is available for a confidential 20-minute Zoom session.

You can get support on:

- Compositional ideas and feedback (Pete, Emily or Lisa)

- Funding and budget advice (Fiona)

- Project planning or general advice (all)

- Wellbeing concerns and support (all)

Whether you're feeling stuck creatively, overwhelmed by funding applications, or just need to talk through a new idea, we're here to listen. Slots are limited, so sign up early and make sure you can attend your chosen time.

Covfefe: Fortnightly Online Chats for Creatives

Sometimes, what you need most is an informal space to connect, share and be heard. Covfefe, our friendly online catch-up, brings composers and creatives together every two weeks to talk about the joys and challenges of our work.

Each session is different, driven by what the group wants to discuss, from navigating uncertainty to sharing new opportunities or just catching up on what everyone’s working on. It’s chaired by sound, but led by the people in the room (virtually, of course!). So grab a cuppa, settle in, and join a growing network of supportive, like-minded creatives.

Listening Club – Last Tuesday of Each Month

If you love discovering new music and hearing what inspires others, our Listening Club is the perfect way to connect over a shared passion. Held online every last Tuesday of the month from 7.30–8.30pm, each session is hosted by a different guest who guides us through the work of a contemporary composer.

We encourage participants to listen to a piece ahead of time, but don’t worry if you haven’t managed it, we’ll also listen together during the session. Think of it like a book club, but with less homework and more music. It’s a welcoming, low-pressure way to explore new sounds, reflect on the listening experience, and engage with others in the community.

Mental Health Awareness Week is a timely reminder that you don’t have to do it all on your own. Whether you’re facing creative block, financial uncertainty, or just the everyday ups and downs of being a composer, we’re here with resources and people who understand what you're going through.

The sound community is open, supportive, and always here to listen. Let’s continue building it together!
