Tom Macfadyen

  • Composer

Tom Macfadyen is a composer/audio-visual artist based in Glasgow and currently in his third year of study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He started playing guitar at the age of eight and began writing music soon after. Tom has always had an explorational approach to sound and composition, and his work so far has covered various styles. Tom is interested heavily in forcing material to their extremes and observing their outcomes. He has experience working with both acoustic instruments and electronic sound and has a particularly strong ability to forge creative partnerships through constant collaboration with filmmakers, contemporary artists/performers, and instrumentalists.

His recent work has made extensive use of glitch and data-bending techniques to produce corrupted sound and image. Recent and ongoing projects include involvement in the Climate Portals project in partnership with COP26 (2021), Maker (2021-22) a sonic art piece that includes sounds he recorded from various artists and makers in Scotland, scape (2021) a string trio written for the Edinburgh String Quartet inspired by the work of Norman McLaren, and his most recent work for percussion duo and film pomegranates & pyrotechnics (2022).
