Stéphane Magnin was born in Roanne in 1970. He graduated from the National Conservatory of Music and Dance (CNSMD) in Lyon and the National School of Music in Villeurbanne, where he studied at the Acanthes Center in Villeneuve-lez-Avignon (1997) and the Académie d ' Summer of IRCAM (1998).
His works are performed in France and abroad, notably by the l’Orchestre National de France, l’Itinéraire, l’Instant Donne, l’Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain (EOC), Odyssée ensemble & cie, Résonance Contemporaine. Winner of several competitions, including the 5th Grame / Eoc Composition Contest 2004, he received orders from the Ministry of Culture (State commission), Radio France, various ensembles and several residencies (Grame, Akademie Der Künste in Berlin, Young Composers Forum in Toronto). He was also co-creator and actor of a music creation collective in Lyon: 9dN (2000-2003).
His musical writing is guided by a strong interest in sound, energy and the musician's relationship to his instrument. His artistic approach is linked to perception and sensitivity, paying great attention to sound rendering and the notion of musical timing, in a search for expression and poetics.
He lives in Paris and currently teaches at the conservatory of Vitry-sur-Seine.
