High Heels and Horse Hair

  • Artist

High Heels and Horse Hair comprises two gifted players from opposite sides of the globe, Australian-born violinist Alice Rickards and Scottish cellist Sonia Cromarty. They met whilst performing with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and soon discovered a shared passion for chamber music.

Described as a ‘loveably quirky high-heeled duo’ they perform in vibrant footwear designed by Helen Bateman, Edinburgh and the Horse Hair of course refers to the more organic material of their bows!

Following a successful debut at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, High Heels and Horse Hair returned the following year with a show entitled ‘Alba to Oz’; an exploration of music from their homelands. Acclaimed as ‘exquisite fusion music’, such innovative programming is key to the ensemble’s appeal and reflects their desire to bring new and unfamiliar music to audiences alongside greats from the string duo repertoire.

Their most recent programme TRANSPLANTED - sounding Scotland's wild plants in music celebrates the countries rich diversity of plant life and music. Creative Scotland, the Hope Scott Trust and the North Highland Initiative kindly funded the creation of this work.
