James Clapperton

James Clapperton was born in Aberdeen, Scotland 1968. He has been a participant at Sound festival for several years. In 2009 his piano quintet Targe Jiu was premiered by himself and Edinburgh Quartet during the festival. James Clapperton has doctorates in music from Sussex University and Russian Studies from Edinburgh University. He studied composition with Philip Grange, Anthony Gilbert and Harrison Birtwistle. Since 1988 he has performed widely as a pianist and has a particularly active career in Norway and Russia. From 1998-2002 he taught at the Grieg Conservatory in Bergen and was the Artistic Director of the Music Factory Festival.

James Clapperton has worked with various leading composers including John Cage, Brian Ferneyhough, Horatiu Radulescu and Salvatore Sciarrino.

As a composer he has enjoyed performances by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Endymion Ensemble, Steven Osborne, Tawain Chamber Orchestra and London Philharmonia. He currently lives in Aukra in Western Norway where he has a teaching position.
