We're looking for a confident freelance leader/director for our Get Creative Ensemble: a small group of mainly teenage musicians of all standards who come together 6 times a year for 2.5 hours to take part in creative music making activities - playing and creating new music.
sound is a new music incubator based in North-East Scotland, encouraging new music creation and discovery. We run the annual soundfestival, as well as year-round activity supporting a wide range of composers, engaging with local communities and providing educational opportunities.
We are committed to working with and supporting people from under-represented groups. Female, LGBTQ and/or gender diverse, global majority or Gypsy/Traveller applicants, as well as applicants with a disability and/or from low income background are encouraged to apply.
Role requirements:
We're ideally looking for a composer with improvisation experience who is also happy conducting. They should be able to facilitate sessions with young people, be able to help co-create work and be able to adapt to their needs, as well as being able to think on their feet compositionally.
The candidate will need to be part of the PVG scheme.
Workshop details:
The sessions take place on Sundays in Aberdeen from 1.30pm and 4pm and candidates should be able to get to and from Aberdeen in the day. Reasonable travel costs will be reimbursed. The successful candidate will be paid £220 per session (4/5ths of MU daily workshop rate to include preparation time).

We anticipate potentially shortlisting two candidates and asking them to run a one-hour session with the young people on the 31st August so that participants can help choose the successful candidate. Please keep this date free. You will be paid a 2-hour fee (£110) and travel will be reimbursed.
Deadline for applying: End of the day on 3rd August 2025.
We are offering a 2-day “grace period” until the end of day on Tuesday 5th August for applicants who can’t reach the deadline due to health challenges, having to care for family members, or other reasonable and/or unexpected circumstances. Please state your reason in the email.
We will inform you whether you are successful or not by the 12th August.
