sound is delighted to be taking part in the Contemporary Music for All (CoMA) Festival this March with a free, open rehearsal celebrating accessible, joyful contemporary music-making. The session will be led in collaboration with Any Enemy, Aberdeen’s new music ensemble, and welcomes participants of all ages and musical backgrounds, including those who don’t play an instrument.
Taking place at the King’s Pavilion, University of Aberdeen, this relaxed afternoon is designed to bring people together through collective music-making in a friendly and inclusive environment. Whether you’re an experienced player, a beginner, or simply curious about contemporary music, this is an opportunity to be part of something creative and collaborative.

Music for everyone
Participants will work together on two iconic and engaging pieces:
In C – Terry Riley A landmark work in contemporary music, In C is open to instrumentalists of any kind and is suitable for players at approximately Grade 2 level and above. Built from repeating musical patterns, the piece allows each performer to contribute at their own pace, creating a rich, evolving sound world that is different every time it is played.
Eko Ilu – Irobosa Osagie This vibrant and inclusive work is open to both instrumentalists and non-instrumentalists. Those who don’t play an instrument are warmly invited to join from 2:30pm to take part using voice, body percussion, and simple sound-making. No previous musical experience is required.
The afternoon will conclude with an informal sharing of both pieces, a chance to experience the energy and excitement of large-scale collaborative performance.
This event reflects CoMA’s mission to make contemporary music accessible to all. The rehearsal is free to attend and designed to be supportive, social, and pressure-free. You can take part as much or as little as you like, meet new people, and explore new sounds in a relaxed setting.
