Our online listening club will be held monthly from 7-8pm on Friday and is a chance to come together regularly to listen to new music and find out more about today's composers.
We will invite a variety of different guest hosts who will explore the music of a different contemporary composer each time. You'll be invited to spend some time listening to one of the composer's works before we meet, but there will also be an opportunity to listen to the work during the session if you don't get around to it beforehand.
Like a book club but with less homework!
For this month's listening club we'll be exploring Carola Bauckholt's Zugvögel - - 12.4', for five woodwind (oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, bass clarinet, bassoon)
Programme note:
Zugvögel
The work is inspired by the flight of migratory birds: Whooper Swans scream with every beat of their wings. They trace large circles before they fly off. They cross an immense airspace. Strict rules of behaviour. Formations. Pelican, Black Scoter, Canada Goose, Cormorant, Hawk, Common Loon, Harlequin Duck. Zugvögel was commissioned by the Calefax Reed Quintet and the Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik and premiered by the Calefax Reed Quintet in Witten on 27 April 2012.
Biography
Carola Bauckholt was born in Krefeld, Germany, in 1959. After working at the Theater am Marienplatz (TAM), Krefeld, she studied composition at the Musikhochschule Köln with Mauricio Kagel (1978-84). She has received numerous awards and is regularly performed internationally. In 2013, she was elected as a member of Akademie der Künste in Berlin. In 2015, she was appointed as professor of composition at the Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität in Linz, Austria.
A central theme of Bauckholt's work is the examination of the phenomena of perception and understanding. Her compositions often blur the boundaries between visual arts, musical theater and concert music. She is especially fond of using noisy sounds, which are often produced by unconventional means. It is important to note that these noises are not just part of some kind of a predetermined compositional structure, but rather they are carefully studied and left free to unfold and develop at their own pace lending the compositions their own unique rhythm.
