apeiron is a work of experimental radio art. It’s composed of elemental sounds, timbres interlocking to form abstract environments portraying power – relentless power - seamless successions with chance stirrings, interruptions, mergings, eddies and backwash. It acknowledges life is movement, subject to constant flux, and portrays sensual unchanging change.
apeiron’s genesis was in Stromness, Orkney, where rhythms depend on shapeshifting tides and weathers, where sea-going vessels throb and creak, and where ocean continually swells, surges, retreats. Time surrounded by tides is different from land-time. Audio recordings of Orcadian sea-moods were made, and residents and visitors to Stromness were offered the chance to be recorded reading aloud tide-times for the town.
Life on our Ocean-wrapped planet depends on water. Humans may have emerged from it, are definitely formed in it in the uterus, and certainly die very quickly without it. Ocean helps maintain our atmosphere and climate, gives us food and other resources, and supports a huge biodiversity. We gain senses of wellbeing and connection from it, as well as experiencing its awesome potential for destruction.
This soundscape pays homage to these deep links and our emotional and listening responses. Active Listening is influenced by cultural training, is a valuable engagement with our world, and is creative. It’s political, never neutral, and produces meaning through increasing knowledge and interpretation. As Pauline Oliveros understood, listening is relational and always a collective experience.
apeiron was commissioned and developed by German broadcaster SWR and is the current winner of the prestigious Karl Sczuka Prize for radio art.
A work composed to be flexible in presentation, this simultaneous broadcast and group listening event devised for soundfestival comments both on radio as individual and community experiences whilst acknowledging apeiron’s grounding in Listening and Imagination.

£14 Standard /£10 (senior citizens)/£6 (jobseekers, full time students, disabled people)/Free (under 18, essential companions).
There is also an option to Pay What You Can (PWYC), so that no one is excluded because of their financial circumstances.
You can thus choose to pay less than the recommended ticket prices if you can’t afford them. You can also choose to pay more, helping to support our activities commissioning new work and supporting local musicians and young people.
