Tonight's CD launch will feature a recital of selected works from Lesley Wilson, bassoon. This will be followed by a short workshop for young people to try out a mini bassoon or tenoroon - if your child is a young aspiring bassoonist or is simply interested in learning a musical instrument, this is a great opportunity for them to learn more about the bassoon and give it a try!

The evening will also mark the launch of sound’s first year in a 5-year focus on "endangered instruments”. The 2017 soundfestival will showcase new commissions, performances and workshops for the bassoon - keep an eye on our website for forthcoming details!

Lesley Wilson was Principal Bassoon with the Scottish National Orchestra (later Royal Scottish National Orchestra) for many years. On being asked to give concert recitals for radio broadcast in the 60’s, Lesley came to realise that the bassoon had a relatively limited recital repertoire compared with other instruments and, often overlooked by composers, was underrepresented in terms of contemporary music.

Since then, Lesley has sought to rectify this and has been on the lookout for contemporary composers willing to explore the expressive potential of the instrument she loves. Some of the works she has come across or personally commissioned are featured on this new CD recording, ‘A Much-Travel’d Clown’.

The CD features several new works by contemporary composers Marcus Blunt, Janet Beat, Roger B Williams, Michael Norris, and Gemma McGregor, as well as works by Hans Gàl and David Johnson. The recorded music is performed by Lesley Wilson, bassoon, Myra Chahin, cello, Kate Friday and Thomas Miller, bassoon, David J Smith, piano, and Pete Stollery, electronics.

‘A Much Travel’d Clown’ is released on Vox Regis, the University of Aberdeen’s record label.

All proceeds from the sale of the CD will support research into Parkinson’s disease.
