Pippa Murphy
As a composer of instrumental and digital music Pippa Murphy has been involved in performances, recordings, collaborations, installations, multimedia work and improvisation in the UK and abroad. She has written music for BBC 2, BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 3, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay in St Giles Cathedral, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Scottish Opera, Scottish Flute Ensemble, Paragon Ensemble, Aberdeen Art Gallery, Salford Art Gallery, Sonic Arts Network, COMA, and numerous contemporary theatre companies including Tron Theatre, Glasgow, Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, 7:84.
She has devised and directed many creative projects throughout the world and has worked in many different musical and social contexts. She works regularly in cross-arts and multi-media collaborations, including composition workshops in Iran, over 50 ‘Sonic Postcards’ projects in primary schools in Aberdeenshire and has worked with ensembles including Scottish Opera, Scottish Ensemble, McFalls Chamber, SCO, Red Note Ensemble. She has devised pieces and trained teachers in Scotland, Syria, Vietnam, Botswana and China with the British Council, and composed with asylum seekers in Glasgow, Manchester and Edinburgh. She has taught at Edinburgh, St Andrews and Aberdeen Universities.
She completed her BMus, MA and PhD in composition at Birmingham University under the supervision of Jonty Harrison and Vic Hoyland. She was the Vice-Chair of Sonic Arts Network for 5 years and has written for Whitakers Almanac, Sunday Times and The Scotsman.
