Philip Sharp
Hailing originally from Glasgow, Philip is currently studying under Murray McLachlan at the Royal Northern College of Music on the prestigious joint course with Manchester University. A prizewinner at the EPTA UK Piano Competition, Philip was awarded second place in his category at the Rome International Piano Competition 2011.
He studied at Chethams School of Music, Manchester, for three years, where he won the Yamaha Piano Competition, and was awarded a concerto appearance with Chester Philharmonic Orchestra, playing Beethoven’s Fifth Concerto. He has also performed concerti with the Manchester Beethoven Orchestra and Nottingham Youth Orchestra.
As a recitalist, Philip has appeared in concert as part of the Scottish Arts Club, the Bath Young Artists Recital Trust, the Master Musicians Concert Series, Newcastle, and at such venues as City Halls, Glasgow, the Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh, and the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. He has been under the tutelage of such eminent pianists as Peter Donohoe, Leslie Howard, Leon McCawley and Michel Beroff.
An avid chamber musician, Philip is the pianist of Kymerikal, an ensemble which specialises in the performance of 20th and 21st-century repertoire. The group is due to make its début at the Anthony Burgess Foundation in Manchester and at the Tête à Tête opera festival at King’s Place, London, this coming summer.
Philip has a keen interest in contemporary music; his repertoire encompasses the work of Thomas Adès and James MacMillan, to whom he has played the composer’s Second Piano Concerto. Upcoming engagements include a performance of Bartok’s Third Concerto with the Manchester University Symphony Orchestra. Philip gratefully acknowledges the generous support of Dewar Arts Awards, Scotland, for their assistance towards the cost of his studies.
