Themes 2011
Nordic 2011
As the first stage in a three-way partnership between sound and organisations in Bergen and St Petersburg, a Nordic theme will flow through the Festival this year. Artists and composers from Nordic countries will be featured in various events.
Vocal Weekend 2011
Following requests from audiences for more vocal music, we have organised a vocal weekend at the end of the Festival. This will feature an exciting collection of events including local, national and international performers: Juice, Stavanger Vocalensemble, Stonehaven and District Choral Society, Con Anima and the incredible EXAUDI with the Endymion Ensemble, with three new works by British composers alongside classic works by Arvo Pärt.
New Music Scotland 2011
sound is proud to be hosting the inaugural New Music Scotland Showcase and Conference. New Music Scotland is a newly formed network, bringing together performers, composers and promoters of new music from across the country. NMS presents an inspiring weekend of performances, talks and discussions led by an opening lecture given by Jonathan Cross, Professor of Musicology at University of Oxford.
University of Aberdeen Music Prize 2011
During sound, the University of Aberdeen, in association with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, will be hosting the fourth biennial University of Aberdeen Music Prize for composers in November 2011, during a weekend of associated events.
The University of Aberdeen Music Prize is an exciting competition for aspiring new composers from around the world. This year composers have been invited to submit new works for any combination of Trumpet and String Quartet of between 5 to 10 minutes duration. Five works will be selected from entries and performed by members of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in a workshop session led by the distinguished composer Julian Anderson, who will be featured in this year’s Composer Portrait.
After the workshop session, one composer will be offered the University of Aberdeen Music Prize – A £5,000 commission to compose work for the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 2012 and broadcast on Radio 3.
