Sarah Leonard

Sarah Leonard is one of Britain’s most respected and versatile sopranos. She was born in Winchester and studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. She has a wide repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to Michael Nyman. She is closely associated with the music of the 20th Century in opera and concert, and has worked with leading composers and conductors including Pierre Boulez in Webern’s Cantatas 1 & 2 with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Kurt Weil's Seven Deadly Sins with the Philamonia conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. With Michael Tilson Thomas she has performed Debussy’s Le Martyre de Saint Sebastien, San Francisco Symphony, and Kreneck's Die Nachtigall, London Symphony Orchestra, and with Peter Eötvös Ligeti’s Requiem in Holland and London. With James Wood she has performed his oratorio Hildegard in the UK and the Netherlands and his music theatre piece Jodo in Japan.

Sarah is an experienced and accomplished recitalist in classical and contemporary repertoire. Recent performances include French and American songs in the New Haven international festival, USA, Berg songs in Warsaw and works by Berio and Dallapiccola in the 2004 South Bank Berio Festival. She has made over thirty CDs including five of English Song with pianist Malcolm Martineau, and When the Heart is Young, a collection of songs by Franz Lehàr with Andrew Ball. Recent releases include Joseph Marx Lieder with Jonathan Powell on Altarus Records and The Ballad Of Kastriot Rexhepi by Michael Nyman.

This autumn, Sarah will be making her debut recital at the Cadogan Hall with Malcolm Martineau amongst other engagements.
