Musiques Démesurées

Musiques Démesurées is an annual festival of new music taking place in Aberdeen’s twinned city, Clermont-Ferrand (France), every November.

sound and Musiques Démesurées have been collaborating since 2013, when Agnès Timmers, Musiques Démesurées’ Director visited soundfestival, and the sound team returned the visit to Clermont-Ferrand. Since then, there have been regular skype conversations between the two festival directors. It helps that sound’s team is distinctly Francophile – the Chair, Festival Director and PR Manager all love France and speak fluent French!

The collaboration has led to an increase in the presence of Scottish composers and musicians being featured in Clermont-Ferrand and French composers and musicians being featured in Aberdeen.

In 2014, the two organisations worked together on a project commissioning two composers to write works for the joint forces of Red Note Ensemble (Scotland) and the string ensemble Orchestre d’Auvergne (France). This led to Laurent Cuniot’s Just Before and William Sweeney’s Absence having its premiere in Aberdeen on the 24th October 2014, followed by a performance in Clermont-Ferrand on the 10th November 2014.

In 2015, the two festivals collaborated on an organ themed project, and are currently making plans for 2016 and beyond.

Musiques Démesurées festival of new music has been running annually in Clermont-Ferrand since 1999, with a diverse programme of music creation and education activities taking place over three weeks in November, encouraging people’s curiosity in contemporary music. It is now one of France’s main new music festivals.
